On Monday, April 8th, 2024, the Brethren of Vivian Lodge No.8267, Brecon, gathered to celebrate VW.Bro. Dr. Paul Calderwood’s remarkable 50 years of service in Craft Freemasonry, a milestone marked by the presence of the Provincial Grand Master, R.W.Bro. D. Gerald Rowbottom.
VW.Bro. Paul embarked on his Masonic journey on April 1st, 1974, with his initiation into Spencer Park Lodge No.6198, London, becoming a joining member in 1977 of Aviation and Combined Services Lodge No.8504, where he attained the Chair of King Solomon in 1983. He became a joining member of Vivian Lodge No.8267, on the 14th of September 2009 in Brecon, Lodge of Benevolence No.7305, 18th October 2013, Hendre Lodge No.3250, 24th of October 2013. A founder member of the Albert Edward Court Lodge of Research No.9908, and an Honorary member of the Music Lodge No.9919.
In 2013, VW.Bro. Paul was Appointed The Prestonian Lecturer, a role that very few attain, the title of the lecture was Freemasonry and the Press.
VW.Bro. Paul is a gifted author, having written many books on Freemasonry such as; This Chequered Existence, Freemasonry and the Press, The Mark of the Red Dragon and many more.
Beyond the Province of South Wales, VW.Bro. Paul extended his memberships in no fewer than nine Lodges, including the prestigious Quatuor Coronati Lodge No.2076, where he served as Secretary twice, and most notably Welsh Installed Masters Lodge No.9857, where he had the honour and privilege of dedicating the banner in 2015 at Newport Masonic Hall.
VW.Bro. Paul’s commitment and expertise were recognised over the years with appointments and promotions:
In Provincial Grand Lodge (Sussex), he was Appointed PPrAGReg in 1990, later Promoted to PPrGReg in 1999.
In Metropolitan Grand Lodge, London, VW.Bro. Paul received London Grand Rank (LGR) in 1992, followed by Appointments as Metropolitan Grand Inspector in 2009 and Assistant Metropolitan Grand Master in 2013.
In United Grand Lodge of England, VW.Bro. Paul was Appointed Acting Assistant Grand Pursuivant in 1996, being Promoted to PAGDC in 2008, PSGD in 2009, and PGSwdB in 2013.
VW.Bro. Paul’s dedication, commitment and influence in Freemasonry are widely acknowledged, with his reputation as a respected and renowned Freemason.
In recognition of his remarkable service, the Provincial Grand Master was delighted to present VW.Bro. Paul with his 50 year certificate and lapel pin, as token of esteem, respect, and admiration held for him throughout the Province.
