“Be Prepared” History is in the making at Llangattock and Howardian Lodge No.2547

On Monday, the 24th of February, 2025, an evening of enlightenment and togetherness was held at Llangattock and Howardian Lodge No. 2547, within the historic walls of Cardiff Masonic Hall. This particular meeting marked a significant milestone, as it was not just the annual election night but a celebration of the Lodge’s rejuvenation and its re-purposing as a Scout Lodge.

The evening commenced with the Lodge being formally opened at 17:45 to conduct essential business, including the election of the Worshipful Master for the ensuing year. W.Bro. Piers Hallihan was duly elected, marking the start of a new chapter for the Lodge. However, this meeting was unlike any previous election night, as it was followed by a unique event that bridged two remarkable organisations.

Following the Lodge’s closing, family, friends, and invited guests from the Scouting community which included Gill Clay, the granddaughter of Robert Baden-Powell, the founder of the Boy Scouts, were welcomed into the Temple for a special presentation by W.Bro. Tony Harvey PJGD, the 2012 Prestonian Lecturer, respected Freemason, and accomplished author. His lecture, titled “Scouting and Freemasonry: Two Parallel Organisations?”, delved into the historical and philosophical connections between these two great institutions.

The presentation highlighted the remarkable alignment in values, symbolism, and community service that is central to both Scouting and Freemasonry. Scouting encourages its members to help others and engage in community involvement, reflecting the same charitable spirit that Freemasonry is renowned for. Both organisations are built on moral integrity, respect, and a commitment to serving others.

W.Bro. Tony Harvey eloquently explored the structural parallels between Scouting and Freemasonry, noting how both organisations have hierarchical frameworks that signify progression and achievement. In Scouting, members advance from Cub Scouts to Scouts and then to Explorers, gaining knowledge and leadership skills along the way. Similarly, Freemasons progress through symbolic degrees, deepening their understanding and responsibilities within the Craft and Royal Arch.

An intriguing historical connection was also revealed—Lord Baden-Powell, the founder of Scouting, was influenced by Masonic principles, particularly in the use of symbolism and the emphasis on moral education. This shared philosophical foundation has contributed to the enduring relationship between Scouting and Freemasonry.

W.Bro. Tony Harvey’s passion and dedication to both organisations were evident throughout his presentation. His engaging delivery captivated the audience, which included both Freemasons and non-Masons, harnessing a greater and deeper understanding and appreciation of the shared values that unite these two institutions.

Following the lecture, during the festive board, lively discussions continued, with guests expressing their enthusiasm for both Freemasonry and Scouting. It was heartening to witness such animated conversations and a renewed sense of purpose and excitement.

The evening also marked a significant achievement for The Provincial Grand Lodge of South Wales. Over the past year, under the guidance of AProvGM, W.Bro. Timothy R. Clark, and with the dedication of several Brethren, considerable efforts have been made to revitalise Llangattock and Howardian Lodge. The Lodge’s repurposing as a Scout Lodge not only breathes a fresh and unique new lease of life into the future of the Lodge, but also reinforces the historical and philosophical bonds between Scouting and Freemasonry.

As Llangattock and Howardian Lodge embarks on this new and exciting journey, it must stand as a beacon of new beginnings, inspiring current and future generations to serve their communities with integrity and compassion, but above all never to give up hope.
