Once again, the Masonic Golf charity event held at Coed Y Mwstwr Golf Club in Bridgend on Wednesday, 28th August 2024, was a tremendous success. Organised by W.Bro’s Jeff Coles, Phil Osborne, and Peter Williams, with invaluable support from V.W.Bro. Roy Woodward, W.Bro’s Philip Aubrey, and Phil Saunders, the event saw great participation from 23 teams of four, consisting of Freemasons, Lady Freemasons, and non-masons alike.
The event welcomed a special challenge from the Province of West Wales, whose team has proposed an inter-Provincial cup next year, promising even more excitement.
This year, the tournament, originally known as the “Masonic Ryder Cup: East vs West”, was renamed the “Mark Newbold Cup” in honour of the esteemed Mason, Mark Newbold, who passed away earlier this year after bravely battling cancer.
The event raised an impressive £3,000, which will be donated to several deserving local charities that include:
- TLC South Wales
- Albert Edward Prince of Wales Care Home.
- The Ronald McDonald House in Cardiff, which supports families staying close to their children in hospital.
- The Old Mill Foundation in Swansea, which provides support to families navigating cancer.
This fantastic fundraising effort was made possible by the players, raffle contributions (well done to W.Bro Phil Saunders), and the generous donations from various sponsors. Special thanks go to the individual Lodges, private donors, and the main sponsor of the day, “Sea Lift Diving”, courtesy of W.Bro. Bryan Waddell of Clyne Lodge.
Who Won The Masonic Golf Day?
Several players stood out on the day, with the team event won by W.Bro. Edley Wright and his team from Cardiff. However, the focus remained on the main competition, East vs West. The West of the Province retained the cup, with V.W.Bro. Roy Woodward once again leading the winning team. This deprived W.Bro. Jeff Coles, the East Captain, of a victory in his debut year. But there’s always next year, Jeff!
A more detailed report, including all supporters, donations, and a full list of winners across all categories, will be published in “Y Dalaith” magazine.
Finally, a heartfelt thank you to everyone who contributed to the success of this annual event. Without question, the real winners were charity and Freemasonry itself.
