We are delighted to announce that two of our Brethren from the Province of South Wales have been recognised in the New Year’s Honours List, both recipients of The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE).
Among them is W.Bro. Tony Wynne, of Newton Lodge. No. 8261, Porthcawl, whose remarkable contributions to Welsh boxing have spanned decades. Tony began his journey with the Welsh Amateur Boxing Association (WABA) at the age of 15, progressing from competing as a schoolboy to representing Wales on 17 occasions, achieving 13 wins, and becoming Featherweight Champion of Wales during his competitive career.
His dedication to the sport extended beyond competition, officiating at two Commonwealth Games, serving as Team Manager for the Welsh Boxing team at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, and the World Championships in Kazakhstan. Tony has attended countless tournaments and training camps in Wales and across the globe, officiating as a referee and judge, and shaping the future of the sport.
The WABA described Tony as “a well-known and impactful individual within our sport.” In 2023, his contributions were further celebrated when he received the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award for his long-standing service to boxing in Wales.
