The Provincial Grand Master attends the oldest Lodge in the Province.

The Provincial Grand Master, R.WBro. D. Gerald Rowbottom accompanied by his Provincial Escort, was in attendance at Indefatigable Lodge No. 237 for the Installation Ceremony of W.Bro Richard Stuart Taylor, PProvJGD, at Swansea Masonic Hall on Monday 8th January 2024.

Indefatigable Lodge was granted a Centenary Warrant on 25th June 1877, when Grand Lodge accepted that the Lodge was a continuation of the original Lodge, Warranted at Neath on 20 September 1777.

This makes Indefatigable Lodge the oldest existing Lodge in the Province, even though Glamorgan Lodge No.36 and Loyal Cambrian Lodge No. 110 have lower Lodge numbers, this is because the latter two Lodges were Antient Lodges, with lower Lodge numbers on the Register of the Antients, than Indefatigable, which was on the Register of the Moderns.

The first Meeting of the Lodge at Swansea was held on 2nd September 1800 and soon afterwards the name of the Lodge was changed to ‘Indefatigable’. It is not known why the name was chosen, but it is in keeping with the tradition of naming Lodges after some outstanding characteristic of Freemasonry.
