W.Bro. Gilbert Anthony Howell Celebrates 50 Years of Service to Lodge of Harmony No. 8414

On January 7th, 1975, W.Bro. Gilbert Anthony Howell (Tony) embarked on his Masonic journey with Lodge of Harmony No. 8414 in Cardiff. Now, five decades later, his dedication and service to Freemasonry, his Lodge, and his Province stand as a testament to his dedication and determination.

Throughout the years, W.Bro. Tony progressed through the ranks of his Lodge, reaching the Chair of King Solomon on May 18th, 1985. His contributions were formally recognised in 2000, when he received his first Provincial appointment as Past Provincial Grand Sword-Bearer. Further promotions followed, including:

  • Past Provincial Junior Grand Warden (2007)
  • Past Provincial Senior Grand Warden (2016)

W.Bro. Tony is widely known throughout the Province as “the man behind the lens.” Serving as the official photographer of the Province for many years, his skilled photography remains on display in Masonic centres across the Province.

One of his most distinguished recognitions came on June 25th, 2012, when he was awarded the Provincial Grand Master’s Commendation for his outstanding dedication and service to Freemasonry. The award was presented by the then Provincial Grand Master, R.W.Bro. Captain Sir Norman Lloyd Edwards.

Even after five decades, W.Bro. Tony remains an active and highly respected member of his Lodge. He continues to share his experiences and knowledge with newer and younger brethren, offering valuable guidance to ensure their journey in Freemasonry is a memorable one.

In addition to his Craft service, Tony’s passion for Freemasonry extended to the Royal Arch. He was exalted into Marmaduke Tennant Chapter No. 1992 in 1978, where he later became First Principal in 2011. His dedication was further acknowledged through Provincial honours, beginning in 2000 as Past Provincial Grand Steward, culminating in the esteemed title of Past Provincial Grand Scribe N in 2019—the highest Provincial appointment in the Royal Arch.

To commemorate this remarkable milestone, Assistant Provincial Grand Master, W.Bro. Dr. Akram Baig, had the honour of presenting W.Bro. Tony with a 50-year certificate and a commemorative lapel pin, a fitting tribute to his half-century of dedication to Freemasonry.

W.Bro. Tony’s commitment and passion for the Craft continue to inspire all who have the privilege of knowing him. His legacy within Lodge of Harmony No. 8414 and beyond is inspirational.
